Frequently Asked Questions

Please see the frequently asked questions to the right or contact us if you can’t see your question below.

Can I put a Skip on the road or pavement outside my property?

Certainly, but only upon applying for a highway permit from the Local District Council. Able Skip Hire Ltd will obtain these permits on your behalf, and the council fee will be added to the skip’s cost. The cost of the permit can be found here. We will supply cones to place around the skip.

Will the skip damage my Driveway?

No. All our vehicles utilize a vertical chain-lift skip loader unit, ensuring the skip is gently lowered into place by our experienced operators and not dragged across the drive surface. When we need to place a skip in a challenging or hazardous position, such as over manhole covers or grass areas, we will request you to sign a ‘hirer accepts responsibility’ document.

What can I not put in the skip?

The following items are prohibited in our skips: Refrigerators, Freezers, Tyres, Asbestos Roofing Sheets, unsealed oil, or paint cans. If any of these waste types are found in the skip, they will either be returned to the hirer or an additional charge may be applied.

How much waste can I put in the skip?

All skips must be filled to the top level of the container. Overloaded skips can cause the vehicle to exceed its legal weight limit, potentially resulting in fines of up to £1000 for our drivers. Moreover, excessively filled skips pose hazards to other road users. Any skips filled beyond capacity will either undergo removal of the excess waste or incur an additional charge.

Can I put different types of waste in the skip?

Yes. In contrast to other skip firms, we operate a recycling centre where all our skips are emptied, and the waste is sorted for recycling. This spares you the time and effort of separating your rubbish. Consequently, soils, bricks, etc., can be placed in the same skip as household and commercial waste.

Can I burn rubbish in a skip?

No. Under no circumstances should a fire be ignited inside a skip. This violates Fire Safety Guideline No.16 and causes damage to the skip and its paintwork, potentially posing Health and Safety implications. Those responsible for a fire will have the skip’s contents deposited on their property, be liable for the repainting cost of the skip, and have their details forwarded to the Environment Agency and Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, who may prosecute the hirer.

How soon can I get a skip?

One days notice is required for all skip deliveries, but we will attempt to meet all orders as soon as possible.

Do I need a permit for my skip?

Before situating a skip on any public highway or road, including pavements, obtaining a skip permit from the local council is essential. Skip permits are necessary to regulate the number of skips on the road, as they occupy space and can affect parking availability and traffic flow.
