Frequently Asked Questions

Please see the frequently asked questions to the right or contact us if you can’t see your question below

Can I put a Skip on the road or pavement outside my property?

Yes, but this is contingent on applying for a Highways Permit from the Local District Council. Able Skip Hire Ltd facilitates the acquisition of these permits on your behalf, and the associated council fee is included in the skip’s overall cost. The cost of the permit can be found here. We will supply cones to place around the skip.

Will the skip damage my Driveway?

No, our vehicles exclusively utilize a vertical chain-lift skip loader unit. This ensures that the skip is not dragged across the drive surface; instead, it is carefully lowered into position by our skilled operators. In cases where placing a skip in a challenging or potentially hazardous location is necessary—such as over maintenance hole covers or on grass areas—we will request that you sign a ‘hirer accepts responsibility’ document.

What can I not put in the skip?

The following items are not permitted in our skips: Refrigerators, Freezers, Tyres, Asbestos Roofing Sheets, and unsealed oil or paint cans. If any of these types of waste are discovered in the skip, they will either be returned to the hirer or an additional charge may be applied.

How much waste can I put in the skip?

All skips must be filled up to the top level of the container. This is essential to prevent overloading, as exceeding the legal weight limit may result in fines of up to £1000 for our drivers. Overloaded skips pose a hazard to other road users. Skips filled excessively will either undergo removal of the excess waste or an additional charge will be applied.

Can I put different types of waste in the skip?

Yes, we do. In contrast to other skip companies, we run a recycling centre where all our skips are emptied, and the waste is sorted for recycling. This eliminates the need for customers to separate their own rubbish, allowing for the convenient disposal of soil, bricks, and household and commercial waste in the same skip.

Can I burn rubbish in a skip?

No, absolutely not. Lighting a fire inside a skip is a violation of Fire Safety Guideline No.16 and can result in damage to the skip and its paintwork, posing potential health and safety risks. Anyone found responsible for causing a fire will have the skip’s contents deposited on their property, be held liable for the repainting cost of the skip, and their information will be shared with the Environment Agency and Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, which may lead to prosecution.

How soon can I get a skip?

One days notice is required for all skip deliveries, but we will attempt to meet all orders as soon as possible.

Do I need a permit for my skip?

Before positioning a skip on any public highway or road, including pavements, it is necessary to obtain a skip permit from the local council. Skip permits are in place to regulate the number of skips on the road, as they occupy space and can affect parking availability and traffic flow.
