A guide to cheap rubbish removal: why you shouldn’t fly-tip

Cheap rubbish removal is imperative and if you need to dispose of waste, you do so responsibly and legally. This is not just because of the potential consequences for you as an individual, but also due to its possible impact on the health of others and our planet.

What is fly-tipping?

Fly-tipping is described by GOV.UK as the “illegal dumping of liquid or solid waste on land or water” – for example, on a site that does not have the required license to legally accept this waste. In layperson’s terms, it’s the practice of dumping rubbish where it shouldn’t be.

What are the effects of fly-tipping?

As well as the potential legal penalties – which we’ll outline below – fly-tipping can pose significant risks to human health and the wider environment.

The irresponsible disposal of waste can lead to the pollution of nearby rivers, with ill consequences for the wildlife that depends on the river system. It can also result in harmful chemicals penetrating into soil, where vegetables are grown that eventually end up on our kitchen tables.

This is without even reckoning with the dangers posed to those encountering land where fly-tipping has taken place. Dumped rubbish may consist of objects that can pose serious risks to the health of both adults and children, such as shards of glass, needles,or even asbestos.

How to report fly-tipping

If you discover illegally dumped waste on either public or private land, you should report it. You can report it to your local police, your local authority or the Environment Agency.

Local councils are generally responsible for dealing with smaller-scale fly-tipping, while it is usually up to the Environment Agency to handle larger instances of illegal dumping. Examples of the latter may include those consisting of more than a tipper load of waste, or where hazardous waste is involved that poses a particular danger to the environment.

What happens if you get caught fly-tipping?

The available punishments for fly-tipping reflect the seriousness of this crime. You are legally required to dispose of your waste in a responsible manner, and if you don’t do so, you could face a criminal conviction, a fine running into hundreds of thousands of pounds, and/or even a prison sentence.

The importance of using a registered waste carrier

If you have waste that needs to be disposed of, it is crucial that instead of fly-tipping, you work with an organisation that is fully licensed to process this waste.

This is exactly what we can offer here at Able Skip Hire Ltd. We operate our own Environment Agency-licensed non-hazardous recycling centre in Leyland, Lancashire. Our purpose-built facility processes more than 30,000 tonnes of material per year, and is equipped to safely handle almost any type of waste. So, if you have your rubbish processed by us, you won’t need to worry about it being illegally dumped.

How can I cheaply remove rubbish?

One other powerful reason not to fly-tip is the fact that there are so many legal and affordable ways to dispose of or otherwise handle your waste, without endangering human health or the environment.

Those options include:

  • Donating your rubbish to charity. A certain item being “rubbish” to you doesn’t mean it would be rubbish to someone else. That’s why it could be a good idea to first sort through your unwanted waste to determine what items you could donate to friends and family, or a charity such as Barnardo’s or the British Heart Foundation (BHF).
  • Reusing items you’d initially intended to dispose of. There are all kinds of fun ways these days to reuse or recycle items. Consider whether certain items in your ‘waste’ pile could be put to another use – for example, being used for an arts and crafts project or even other everyday tasks like cleaning, gardening or decorating. You may find that your pile of rubbish – and with it, the amount you have to pay for waste disposal – quickly reduces.
  • Breaking down bulkier waste. If you’ve already reached out to a waste removal company only to be deterred by the quote they gave you, it’s worth bearing in mind that such businesses often charge based on load size. You might therefore be able to reduce your waste disposal costs simply by breaking down bulkier items, which will help to compact your rubbish pile into as small a size as possible.
  • Hiring a skip from a service like ours. Here at Able Skip Hire Ltd, we take pride in providing an affordable skip hire service to individuals and businesses around the Lancashire area, covering the likes of Blackburn, Preston, Bolton, Wigan and Chorley. But before you reach out to us for your skip hire quote, make sure you’ve carefully perused our types and sizes of skips. One of the classic errors many people make is asking for a skip that is larger than they require, meaning they are charged more than they strictly need to pay for a skip. Bear in mind, too, that we can offer some of our skips at a discounted rate if you only intend to use it for inert material, such as hardcore and soils.

So, if you live in Lancashire and are looking to dispose of waste cheaply, why wait any longer to get in touch with us? Give us a call on 01772 622342, and we’ll be pleased to help you remove your unwanted rubbish – legally, safely and affordably.
