How did you mark the recent Earth Day?
Blink and you will have missed it! On 22nd April, the world celebrated the latest Earth Day, which from humble Vietnam-era origins, has come to be observed by over one billion people each year.
Earth Day is all about treasuring our planet and thinking about how we can save it, and there’s no question that it has gained particular momentum in recent years.
Last year’s Earth Day was especially significant, as it was the date on which the landmark Paris Agreement was signed by the United States, China and 120 other countries.
What have this year’s celebrations been about?
This year’s Earth Day celebrations have sought to build on such progress for the environmental protection agenda – indeed, for many communities it has morphed into an Earth Week, consisting of seven days’ worth of activities focused on international environmental issues.
This year, for example, we saw the March for Science take place across more than 600 cities around the world to draw attention to science and the role that it plays in all of our lives. It will be followed on 29th April by the People’s Climate March, which will take place throughout the United States and protest the environmental policies of the administration of US President Donald Trump.
A short history of a very special day
The first ever Earth Day took place in 1970 in the United States, and saw an incredible 20 million Americans take to the streets, parks and auditoriums to hold massive coast-to-coast rallies in support of a healthy and sustainable environment.
It all came about due to one man, Gaylord Nelson, the then-US Senator from Wisconsin who was moved to establish the event after witnessing the ravages of the 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California.
Earth Day is now very much global, being coordinated by the non-profit Earth Day Network and even having its own flag, showing a picture of the Earth taken from the Apollo 17 spacecraft on its way to the Moon. It has its own anthems, too, one of which pairs lyrics about protecting the planet with the tune of Beethoven’s Ode to Joy.
It’s not too late to change your own habits
This year’s Earth Day may have passed, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a wide range of ways to celebrate the event and do your bit to help make the planet that little bit safer and healthier.
You could, for example, opt to walk, cycle or take public transport to work instead of taking your car, or you could plant a tree, take a tote bag to the shop or grow your own fruit and veg. Or what about going paperless in your home or office, upgrading your appliances to energy-efficient ones or conserving water by fixing leaky taps and turning off water when you aren’t using it?
